Two experiments, using pictorial or verbal stimuli, were designed to test encoding among young children and adults. In both experiments, results indicated progressively smaller encoding specificity effects with increasing age. A sample of school children, ages 7-11, was given a range of short-term memory tests to determine whether recall was optimised by aural or by visual stimuli presentation. Results showed that for both sexes and for each age group aural presentation was consistently superior to visual. (Author)

Five- and nine-year olds' (N=80) television viewing and program recall in response to learning instructions were examined. Instructions affected visual-emphasis program segments only; visual orientation and cued recall increased in younger children; and free recall and cued recall were enhanced in older children.
