Firat, Tahsin; Bildiren, Ahmet – Journal of Further and Higher Education, 2021
The purpose of this study was to identify and describe the strengths and weaknesses of a student with LD from their pre-school period until their last year of university. The participant is a 4th year student in a university Guidance and Psychological Counselling department. This study used multiple qualitative research methods, including a case…

Bineham, Susan C.; Shelby, Liz; Pazey, Barbara L.; Yates, James R. – Journal of School Leadership, 2014
Federal legislation allows local education agencies to use a student's response to scientific research-based interventions as a method of identifying specific learning disabilities. As a result, educational leadership is challenged to implement response to intervention (RTI). Despite increased literature addressing RTI, no consensus on…

Ryckman, David B. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1981
Although indexes of scatter on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised computed for 100 learning disabled (LD) elementary children were significantly greater than values previously reported for the normal standardized sample, the substantial overlap suggests the inadvisability of continuing the search for a characteristic LD profile.…

Marston, Doug; And Others – Exceptional Children, 1984
An examination of the peer discrepancy concept and the percentages of students (grades 1-6) declared eligible for special education with varying discrepancy ratios revealed that a 2.0 to 3.0 times discrepancy is a reasonable level for identifying low-performance students. (CL)

Kaufman, Alan S. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1981
The paper reviews Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised research that has particular pertinence for the assessment of learning disabilities (LD). Three topics are treated in-depth: factor analysis investigations, recategorization of subtests into Bannatyne's four groupings, and interscale/intrascale scatter. (Author)

Curriculum-Based Measurement: An Alternative to Traditional Screening, Referral, and Identification.

Marston, Douglas; And Others – Journal of Special Education, 1984
Students (N=147) referred for special education evaluation by curriculum-based and traditional methods were compared. Numbers referred through each method were similar. Academic achievement was almost the sole criterion in teacher referral and Ss referred through weekly achievement measurements were as likely as teacher referred Ss to demonstrate…

Henry, Stephan A.; Wittman, Robert D. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1981
The study examined the use of A. Bannatyne's Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R) subtest score recategorization hierarchy in identifying elementary students with learning disabilities (LD). The results indicated that Bannatyne's pattern was of little value in differentiating between LD students and nonLD students and, if…

Itskowitz, Rivka; And Others – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1986
Verbal and nonverbal measures of higher cognitive functions were used to examine the degree of difference between the thought processes of culturally deprived and learning disabled children. Four groups of 20 subjects (ages 8-10) were studied. Results of both traditional and qualitative scoring differentiated between the two populations. (JW)

Breen, Michael J.; And Others – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1984
Grade equivalent scores and standard scores for 32 elementary learning disabled were compared and yielded significant correlations. Mean grade equivalent scores did, however, significantly differ for the two reading measures but not when standard scores were used. The two math indices yielded nonsignificant grade equivalent scores. (Author/CL)

Perlmutter, Barry F.; Parus, Mildred V. – Learning Disability Quarterly, 1983
Diagnostic procedures used to identify children (grades K-6) with learning disabilities in 14 school districts were studied and compared. Although some similarities existed between districts, uniformity was lacking in important areas such as test selection, extent of testing, and cutoff scores on intelligence and other tests. (Author/CL)

Lesiak, Walter J., Jr. – Psychology in the Schools, 1973
The results of this study and the implications for data usage suggest that a screening battery administered by classroom teachers and augmented by aides may constitute a procedure whereby a school psychologist could initially identify and gather relevant data about primary-grade children who manifest handicaps that may interfere with present and…

Meade, Linda S.; And Others – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1981
To examine the concurrent and construct validity of the Slingerland Screening Tests (SST) for Children with Specific Language Disability in the assessment of learning disabilities, 382 children in grades 1 through 4 were given both the SST and an IQ test. The SST errors were significantly negatively correlated with IQ scores. (Author)

Weber, Gail Yerby – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1980
A comparison study involving 50 second-through-fifth graders was designed to analyze the relationships between the incidence of visual abnormalities and high and low academic achievement. Data suggested that children with deficient visual skills may experience greater problems academically. (SBH)

Weiner, Sally – Illinois Schools Journal, 1979
The regular classroom teacher's role in the identification of learning-disabled children is important but often difficult. Identification is facilitated, however, by recognition of a pattern of symptoms rather than one single sign. (Author/GC)

Westerman, S. Thomas; And Others – NJEA Review, 1982
Ways of diagnosing dyslexia are discussed along with the developmental symptoms, which include balancing and hearing deficiencies, reversal of letters or words and unusual posture. Medical treatment with antihistamines and other drugs is described. Approximately 75 percent of individuals are shown to respond favorably to therapy. (CM)
