Whitacre, Ian; Rumsey, Chepina – Cognition and Instruction, 2018
This article contributes to the research literature concerning prospective elementary teachers' mathematical thinking and learning with a focus on flexibility. We present a case study of a prospective elementary teachers' development of flexibility in mental addition and subtraction during a Number and Operations course. Building upon the…

Flexer, Roberta J. – Teaching Exceptional Children, 1989
A strategy is presented for teaching arithmetic to students with mental retardation, based on subitizing, skill of recognizing number of objects in a set without actually counting, and pattern recognition. The strategy helps children understand concept of addition by representing number configurations on 5-frames and 10-frames, and reduces need…

Bruno, Alicia; Martinon, Antonio – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1999
Presents some results of a study on teaching negative numbers. Focuses on the identification of addition and subtraction, the use of the number line, additive problem solving, and the possibility of following several sequences of numerical extensions. Indicates the importance of previous ideas on positive numbers and how these ideas influence the…

Jones, G. A.; And Others – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1985
Case studies describe the positive responses of two elementary learning disabled students involved in an experimental number fact program. The program emphasized development of strategies matched to individual learning needs in a nontraditional approach to the organization of addition facts. (Author/CL)

Peck, Donald M.; Jencks, Stanley M. – School Science and Mathematics, 1976
First graders at three different schools were individually interviewed to determine their understanding of missing addend problems. Details of the interview are provided. Behaviors separating successful from unsuccessful students, students' number conservation ability, and the abstractness of missing-number problems are discussed. (DT)

Creekmore, Walter N.; Creekmore, Nancy N. – Academic Therapy, 1983
A math strategy using an "add-card" which illustrates simple addition facts was originally developed for learning disabled students but was also successfully used with mildly retarded students. (CL)

Arsenault, Cathy; Lemoyne, Gisele – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 2000
Analyzes a didactical sequence for the teaching of addition and subtraction procedures and algorithms. Uses didactical procedures by children in problem solving activities in order to gain a better understanding of the interaction between numbers, numeration, and operations knowledge which are involved in the construction of addition and…

Thompson, Charles S.; Van de Walle, John – Arithmetic Teacher, 1984
How the manipulative aid called the "10 frame" can be used to teach the number combinations for 10, the addition facts that bridge 10, and the place value nature of our number system is described. (MNS)

Irwin, Kathryn C. – Education and Treatment of Children, 1991
Eight students with Down's syndrome, aged 11 through 13, were taught to add by counting-on in a 5-day teaching program. Teaching included instruction in component skills and use of precision teaching techniques. All students continued to use the technique six months later and generalized the technique to other materials. (Author/DB)
