Transcending Physical Mobility for Immersive Learning: Visual Arts, VR Technology, Science, and Social Studies Integration
Art Education, v75 n4 p20-26 2022
Virtual reality (VR) is no longer a surprisingly novel technology. Most art educators have heard about VR, although they may not have a detailed knowledge of or experience with it. However, as VR has become commercialized, education researchers have also looked at using VR for teaching, and they have discussed its effects on students' learning. Here, the authors discuss how to adopt VR in art education and the important role of the arts in VR and VR-integrated lessons. This study proposed a new method of conducting arts-integration lessons using VR technology and shared the process and results of lessons with students who experience VR-, visual arts--, social studies--, and science-integrated lessons. This study also described how to effectively convert personal and transient VR experiences into sharable, everlasting forms of educational performance through visual arts creation. The authors provide art educators with the possibilities for immersive learning by integrating VR technologies with visual arts and other subjects. In addition, the study explains how students' experiences can be materialized within virtual and real spaces through VR visual arts integration.
