Introducing the Lifetime Exercise and Physical Activity Service-Learning (LE PAS) Program
Carson, Russell L.
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (JOPERD), v79 n1 p18-22, 35 Jan 2008
In August and September 2005, two violent hurricanes--Katrina and Rita--hit Louisiana. Hundreds of thousands of residents were relocated to temporary living communities, where most of the economically poor remain today. This state's largest trailer community, "Renaissance Village," was erected almost overnight in a cow pasture in Baker, Louisiana. Since its opening, various local and state service groups and the College of Education at Louisiana State University have partnered to provide a network of after-school services to the K-5 children of Renaissance Village. As part of these efforts, the LE PAS program was designed to address the physical and social needs of displaced children. This article describes the unique living environment of Renaissance Village and how LE PAS was created to enrich the daily life of its young residents. The background, development, structure, service-learning component, effectiveness, and future plans of LE PAS are also outlined. (Contains 1 table.)
