Seven easily obtainable background variables were used as predictors of academic achievement in a sample of fourth grade pupils. A combination of five of these variables yielded high predictive validity. (Author/JKS)

The interaction of mental ability and of two different instructional methods was investigated for a second grade linear metric curriculum unit. Mental ability was positively correlated with achievement under the guided discovery method, but essentially uncorrelated for the self paced mastery learning method. (Author/JKS)

The 121-item Children's Interest Inventory was administered to 517 children in grades four through six. Teachers also rated each child's scholastic, social, and creative ability. Factor analysis revealed nine boys' factors and eight girls'. Interests were not related to ability ratings, somewhat related to grade, and highly related to gender.…
