Marianna Alesi; Giulia Giordano; Sonia Ingoglia; Cristiano Inguglia – European Journal of Special Needs Education, 2024
Since COVID-19 pandemic started, schools had to face environmental changes, one was shifting from a face-to-face educational approach to online learning. It represented an unfavourable learning environment, especially for children with Specific Learning Disabilities (SpLD). Following the Self Determination Theory (SDT) framework, the current study…

Al-Hilawani, Yasser A. – Learning Disabilities: A Multidisciplinary Journal, 2020
Proposed guidelines have been published recently (Al-Hilawani, 2016) to help identify and determine for the first time the existence of learning disabilities among students in the Middle East Arab (M.E.A.) countries. These guidelines have been drawn from recent and up-to-date information available on learning disabilities. The purpose of this…

Hendricks, Emma L.; Fuchs, Douglas – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 2020
Response to intervention (RTI) has been promoted for nearly 20 years as a valid supplement to or alternative method of learning disability (LD) identification. Nevertheless, important unresolved questions remain about its role in disability identification. We had two purposes when conducting this study of 229 economically and racially diverse poor…

Bugden, Stephanie; Ansari, Daniel – Developmental Science, 2016
In the present study we examined whether children with Developmental Dyscalculia (DD) exhibit a deficit in the so-called "Approximate Number System" (ANS). To do so, we examined a group of elementary school children who demonstrated persistent low math achievement over 4 years and compared them to typically developing (TD), aged-matched…

Grimm, Kevin; Zhang, Zhiyong; Hamagami, Fumiaki; Mazzocco, Michele – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 2013
We propose the use of the latent change and latent acceleration frameworks for modeling nonlinear growth in structural equation models. Moving to these frameworks allows for the direct identification of "rates of change" and "acceleration" in latent growth curves--information available indirectly through traditional growth…

Wu, Sarah S.; Willcutt, Erik G.; Escovar, Emily; Menon, Vinod – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 2014
Although behavioral difficulties are well documented in reading disabilities, little is known about the relationship between math ability and internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Here, we use standardized measures to investigate the relation among early math ability, math anxiety, and internalizing and externalizing behaviors in a group of…

Black, F. William – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1983
Investigated digit repetition performance in learning-disabled children in an effort to assess its clinical and theoretical significance. Clincally, learning-disabled children (N=100) had a higher than expected incidence of large verbal-performance discrepancies, although mean overall digit repetition performance did not differ appreciably from…

Carroll, James L.; And Others – Psychology in the Schools, 1984
Assessed the self-concepts of educable mentally impaired, learning disabled, and nonhandicapped children using the Student Self-Evaluation (SSE), Teacher Evaluation Scale (TES), and How I See Myself (HISM) test. The results suggested that handicapped children, as a group, have a lower self-concept than have nonhandicapped children. (JAC)

Champion, Laura; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Compares 20 learning disabled children with Exner (1978) norms on nonpatient, withdrawn, and behavior problem children. The findings clearly show differences in perceptual accuracy, affective ratio, egocentricity index, and reaction to emotion-laden stimuli. (JAC)

Swanson, H. Lee – Intelligence, 1993
Three experiments involving 85 learning-disabled (LD) children and 101 non-LD children investigated whether memory difficulties of LD children may be attributable in part to executive processing. Results suggest that LD readers may suffer from executive processing deficiencies, although they do not rule out effects of language-specific processes.…

Whitford, Elaine M.; And Others – Canadian Counsellor, 1982
Compared learning disabled (LD) and normally achieving (NA) grade three children. Results showed general demographic factors did not differentiate but significantly more LD than NA children came from homes with parental separation. LD mothers had significantly lower perceptions of their children's academic abilities and lower expectations. (Author)

Desoete, Annemie; Gregoire, Jacques – Learning and Individual Differences, 2006
A longitudinal study was conducted on 82 children to investigate, firstly the numerical competence of young children and the predictive value of (pre)-numerical tests in kindergarten, and, secondly, whether children's knowledge of the numerical system and representation of the number size is related to their computation and logical knowledge and…

Swanson, H. Lee – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1989
Examined potential central processing strategy differences among subgroups of children on a series of elaborative encoding tasks. Children in lower verbal and learning ability subgroups differed from those in higher ability groups in how they shared, discriminated, and selectively allocated resources between recall tasks. (RH)

Geary, David C.; Hamson, Carmen O.; Hoard, Mary K. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 2000
Compared performance of first and second graders with normal intelligence but with learning disabilities (LD) in mathematics, reading, or both and children with variable achievement test performance to that of academically normal peers on experimental and psychometric tasks. Found that LD groups showed specific cognitive deficit patterns; children…

Swanson, H. Lee – Intelligence, 1993
Models of working memory were compared in 2 experiments as means of explaining variance in the comprehension of 95 skilled and 80 learning-disabled readers from grades 4 through 7. Results suggest that learning-disabled children's working memory problems are functionally related to higher order processes and not memory alone. (SLD)
