Krakow, Joanne; Curcio, Frank – 1978
Cross-lagged panel analysis was used to determine the causal relationship between arithmetic progress and two factors (concrete operational development and visuo-spatial figurative ability) in 28 learning disabled boys (9-12 years old). Results of seven operational tasks, five figurative tests, and a diagnostic arithmetic test administered early…

Fleischner, Jeannette E.; Garnett, Katherine – Learning Disabilities: An Interdisciplinary Journal, 1983
The article discusses the arithmetic achievement deficits of learning disabled students, cites research on cognitive factors involved, reviews the neurological evidence, and describes orientations focusing on cognitive psychology and the instructional context. Recent findings of an arithmetic task force from Columbia University are summarized. (CL)

Chard, David; Gersten, Russell – Journal of Special Education, 1999
Examines the concept of number sense in mathematics learning, compares this concept to that of phonological awareness in reading, and urges application of existing research to improving mathematics instruction for students with mathematical disabilities. Reviews research on building automaticity with basic facts, adjusting instruction to address…

Baroody, Arthur J. – American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 1987
The effects of problem size on judgments of commutativity by 51 moderately and mildly retarded students were investigated. Results indicated that many retarded students who are given computational practice recognize the general principle that addend order does not affect the sum. (Author/DB)

Pillay, Hitendra; Wilss, Lynn; Boulton-Lewis, Gillian – Mathematics Education Research Journal, 1998
Examines arithmetic and algebra knowledge from a cognitive perspective in an effort to determine what constitutes a pre-algebraic level of understanding. Presents results of a longitudinal study designed to investigate students' readiness for algebra. Proposes a model for the transition from arithmetic to pre-algebra to algebra. Contains 29…

Brown, Margaret; Kuchemann, Dietmar – Mathematics in School, 1977
Children between the ages of 10 and 13 were asked to write stories to accompany five computational problems. Stories were scored for suitability and it was found that students were most successful on subtraction and least successful on multiplication stories. Scores on this test correlated with mathematics achievement scores. (SD)

Harel, Guershon, Ed.; Confrey, Jere, Ed. – 1994
This book is a compilation of recent research on the development of multiplicative concepts. The sections and chapters are: (1) Theoretical Approaches: "Children's Multiplying Schemes" (L. Steffe), "Multiplicative Conceptual Field: What and Why?" (G. Vergnaud), "Extending the Meaning of Multiplication and Division" (B. Greer); (2) The Role of the…

Saxe, Geoffrey B. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1985
This study showed that Oksapmin children not only spontaneously use the indigenous numerical system of their nontechnical culture but also have created new forms of numerical symbolization and calculation to deal with schooling arithmetic problems. Novel conceptual developments, factors mediating the schools effect, and the influence of prior…

Schliemann, Analucia D.; Araujo, Claudia; Cassunde, Maria Angela; Macedo, Suzana; Niceas, Lenice – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1998
Analyzes the use of the commutative property for solving multiplication problems by children who learn about multiplication in schools and by street vendors who solve multiplication problem through repeated addition. Concludes that the use of commutativity to solve multiplication problems is closely related to the use of multiplication. Contains…

Kieren, Thomas E., Ed. – 1980
Presented are materials related to the work of the Number and Measure and Rational Numbers working group of the Georgia Center for the Study of the Learning and Teaching of Mathematics. Much of the content reports on attempts to bring constructs from developmental psychology and mathematics to bear in understanding children's ideas of number and…

Herscovics, Nicolas; Linchevski, Liora – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1994
Investigated the upper limits of (n=22) seventh-grade students' informal processes in solving first degree equations in one unknown prior to instruction. Results indicated the existence of a cognitive gap between arithmetic and algebra characterized as the students' inability to operate spontaneously with or on the unknown. (37 references)…
