Cultivating a Culture of Global Citizenship
Alexandra Mylonas
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
Students face an interconnected world; in this world, we are obliged to recognize diverse perspectives and in turn, communicate across cultures. Thirteen years ago, Odyssey Charter School (OCS) in Wilmington, Delaware, started an innovative mission unlike any other in our region. A bilingual school system that not only teaches the core subjects required by the Delaware Department of Education (DDOE) but also teaches the Greek language and culture alongside the native English language and diverse American cultures. This study took place at OCS, which educates grades K-12, on a campus of six educational buildings. The focus of this study was to cultivate a global citizenship mentality at OCS to enhance student success. A goal to realign priorities where our students were concerned, by providing skills and abilities to help make them successful in the new global world we are living in. Specifically, enhancing their knowledge, understanding, and experiences, shifting their attitudes to be culturally sensitive and contribute meaningful relationships among each other and flourish in a global society. To achieve the goals set forth, cultural sensitivity, meaningful relationships, and ultimately global awareness and citizenship is enhanced through a Food Studies course implemented in the middle school. In this course, infusing initiatives such as experiential learning into the curricula and synthesizing current research in the field of global competency, created a meaningful pathway for internationally-minded student learning opportunities.
