Update: The State of Native Education. Report to The Legislature
Willard Bill Jr.
Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction
Washington State is home to 29 Federally recognized tribes and each tribe has the authority to govern themselves and manage their own affairs. This self-governance allows them to establish their own laws and manage a wide range of services including education, healthcare, and natural resource management. The report provides a brief overview of Tribal history in Washington. It also discusses the role of the Office of Native Education (ONE), the work ONE is doing to connect with students and communities, implementation of the John McCoy (lulilaš) Since Time Immemorial curriculum, and future opportunities to support Native Education in Washington.
