A study was undertaken at the Canadian Forces Base Saint-Jean to determine whether sex is a significant factor in second language learning. Two prose passeges (one English, one Yoruba) were used as reading texts in a study of 29 undergraduates in the University of Ibadan to determine whether native speakers of Yoruba read English texts faster and more efficiently than they read equivalent texts in Yoruba. This paper reports on attempts to predict the aptitude of nine-year-old German children for learning English. Subjects participated in a pilot study in which the aptitude and achievement of three classes were compared. Findings support continued use of objective tests of language proficiency in predicting academic achievement. (CHK)
