Bronzaft, Arline L.; McCarthy, Dennis P. – Environment and Behavior, 1975
This study investigated the hypothesis that low reading achievement may be related to noise interference. Reading scores of children in classrooms near train tracks were lower than scores of children whose classrooms were quieter. Score differences may be due to children's blockage of all sounds in a noisy environment. (Author/MR)

Berg, Mary; Medrich, Elliott A. – Environment and Behavior, 1980
This study examines the ways in which neighborhoods as physical environments affect children's play and play patterns. Four urban neighborhoods were examined for terrain, access to play space, social interaction, locus of play, safety, and mobility. It was found that children's play patterns are influenced by the environment they live in. (DS)

Beck, Robert J.; And Others – Environment and Behavior, 1973
Discusses research on man-environment relations and initiates the process of formulating a research paradigm for studying environmental moves and readjustments. Uses a renovated academic center as a specimen case. (JR)

Mehrabian, Albert; Russell, James A. – Environment and Behavior, 1974
Describes a study to develop and cross validate a verbal measure of information rate. This measure should be helpful in assessing the information rate of situations, whether the situations are described verbally, presented pictorally or with audiovisual recordings, or experienced directly by subjects. (Author/MLB)

Procedures for Investigating the Effect of Light on Impression: Simulation of a Real Space by Slides

Hendrick, Clyde; And Others – Environment and Behavior, 1977
This study assessed whether slides of lighting arrangements could adequately simulate results from real space. Data indicated that in many important respects the results for the slides matched those for the real space for ratings on semantic differential scales, but that less consistent results were obtained for multidimensional scaling.…

Hayward, D. Geoffrey; And Others – Environment and Behavior, 1974
Major findings of this study indicate that a relationship exists between children's preference of playground types as measured by length of stay, frequency of visits and personal interviews. Adventure type playgrounds received highest preference followed in order of preference by contemporary and traditional types. (MLB)

Peterson, George L. – Environment and Behavior, 1974
This study demonstrates an evaluation technique that can be utilized by the wilderness manager. It attempts to assess the recreation user's point of view toward the wilderness environment by measuring and comparing desired and perceived experience in terms of environmental conditions and experiences. (Author/MLB)

Carp, Frances M.; And Others – Environment and Behavior, 1976
This study produced an empirical description of environmental quality in reference to residential use by taking item responses of 2,541 residents of the San Francisco Bay Area and subjecting them to factor analysis. Twenty factors which provide a definition of environmental quality were produced. (BT)
Descriptors: Acoustical Environment, Community Problems, Community Study, Environmental Influences

Mandel, David R.; And Others – Environment and Behavior, 1980
This study was designed to investigate the effects of certain aspects of the outdoor environment on the spatial perceptions of the occupants of residential settings. Among the findings were data suggesting that a dormitory room is more territorial for females than for males; thus females are more susceptible to crowding effects. (DS)
