Alaska's Reading Playbook: A Practical Guide for Teaching Reading
Region 16 Comprehensive Center
This five-part playbook was created to provide practical, proven methods to improve the reading outcomes of all learners in Alaska. It defines and provides clear, step-by-step evidence-based strategies for five elements of reading instruction: (1) phonological awareness; (2) phonics; (3) fluency; (4) vocabulary; and (5) comprehension. When creating the guide, Alaska's unique educational landscape meant that it needed to include both the science behind the engaging strategies as well as specific teaching tools. Educators who were well-versed in Native Alaskan language and culture were consulted so that the rich oral traditions of Alaskan communities could be tied with what is known from research about the acquisition of literacy. In each section there is a synopsis of research on the topic and instructional strategies appropriate for prekindergarten through grade five. Where possible, links to video resources have been included so that educators can see the best practices in action and deepen their knowledge. There is also an extensive reference section.
