Grade 8 students using the Introductory Physical Science course improved their scores on a test of science processes (observing, comparing, classifying, quantifying, etc.) after studying the first five chapters of the materials. This study was designed to see if objectives accompanying test items increased cognitive learning. The results indicate that objectives accompanying pretest items facilitate student study and preparation for posttests, but objectives accompanying posttest items inhibited performance. (BR)
