Evaluating Cultural Humility and Responsiveness Training on Professionals Working with Diverse Clients in the Field of Applied Behavior Analysis
Mohammed Faiz Alasmari
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Washington
This study examined the effects of using an online module to train in-service BCBAs and practitioners on practicing cultural humility, responsiveness, awareness, and self-reflection within the ABA field. In the online module intervention, participants were exposed to case scenarios, course materials, and individual cultural humility questions, which highlighted cultural and practice-influenced dilemmas for BIPOC clients. The study implemented training models in culturally humble, responsive and aware practices to improve professionals' skills and understanding. BCBAs and practitioners reported improved skills and comfort levels when implementing ABA evidence-based practices, particularly for clients who may represent culturally diverse backgrounds. The results indicated that BCBAs and practitioners who had training in cultural humility and awareness practices (i.e., case scenarios, course materials, or individual cultural humility questions) reported better understanding of culturally humble, self-reflective, and personal accountability practices for individuals and families from diverse backgrounds. Professionals who participated in this study reported increasing reflective and culturally aware understanding of practices and applications with BIPOC clients after receiving continuing education materials designed to bring attention to diversity and cultural differences.
