Connectives as Processing Signals: How Students Benefit in Processing Narrative and Expository Texts
van Silfhout, Gerdineke; Evers-Vermeul, Jacqueline; Sanders, Ted – Discourse Processes: A multidisciplinary journal, 2015
Many young readers fail to construct a proper mental text representation, often due to a lack of higher-order skills such as making integrative and inferential links. Britton, Bruce K.; And Others – Discourse Processes, 1983

Graesser, Arthur C.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Education, 1980
Retention of prose is examined as it is affected by (1) outlines as advanced organizers; (2) preexperimental familiarity with the material; and (3) text genre. Written syntactic complexity is considered in relation to the four modes of discourse (argumentation, exposition, narration, and description). The range of syntactic…

The implications of the research studies reviewed here may offer direction for education in general. Instructional strategies which make use of variation in writing mode to encourage gains…

Goelman, Hillel – Discourse Processes, 1982
Concludes that children could attend to texts selectively when reading or listening to expository prose, and when reading, but not in listening to narrative prose. (FL)

McKeown, Gerry; Freebody, Peter – Australian Journal of Reading, 1988
Argues that many interventions for introducing Aboriginal children to literacy continue to be based on "language deficit" models. Examines whether there is indeed a mismatch between the nonstandard spoken language of some Aboriginal children and textbook language. (RAE)
