A win-at-all-costs mentality in high school athletics increasingly promotes commercialism over academics. Some school districts have enacted a 1-year ban from competition for athletes who transfer within the district. Summarizes experiences of three student athletes. (MLF)

High school sports programs face potential problems because of increased competitiveness. School boards can act to encourage student participation, add junior varsity and intramural programs, hire coaches as teachers, set financial priorities, establish an athletic council, and start educating people about the purposes of school sports.
