Some school space is "surplus" only when measured by the old needs of traditional education. When considered for the broader needs of the community education concept, the space is an opportunity for better communities. (Author)

School design is changing in response to community needs. Today, flexibility is the key word in planning, designing, and renovating schools. Planning teams should consider schools' role as community learning centers. School size, shared space, enrollment changes, security, and parental choice of facilities are important planning elements.
