Learning Forward Standards in Education: Their Use by School Districts in Planning Professional Development for a Digital Curriculum
Vincent Gravina IV
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Widener University
The purpose of this study was to examine how district administrators use the standards for professional learning when planning professional development for a digital curriculum. By using standards, leaders can guide their professional development practices. Previous research indicates that professional development is essential for any significant initiative to succeed. For this study, the researcher used the Learning Forward's established seven standards for professional learning as a framework for the study. For the purpose of this study, the defined digital curriculum was Summit Learning. Participants in the study included administrators whose districts partner with Summit Learning. The researcher conducted quantitative research using a modified Learning Forward assessment as the instrument. The results of the survey revealed leaders responsible for professional development fell between "sometimes" and "frequently" in their professional development practices and the use of standards. The results of this study provide a resource for district and school leaders responsible for planning, facilitating and implementing professional development for a new curriculum or initiative. Moreover, there are budgetary and temporal implications for leaders to consider when planning and conducting professional development to their respective staff members.
