Faculty productivity as measured by publication for the Medical College of Virginia School of Medicine was computed and compared to that of Ph.D.'s in laboratories stressing scientific publication, as reported in previous research. A similar bimodal productivity by age was found for clinical faculty in the medical school setting. (JT)

The development of a program designed to improve the teaching effectiveness of faculty members of a new Introductory Psychopathology course at the University of Washington School of Medicine is described. Five studies of the validity of student ratings of teaching are evaluated and one used as a model for further inquiry with the conclusion that they can provide useful information relevant to the improvement of instruction if methods of data collection and analysis are improved. Since nurses and other paramedical staff members observe residents interacting with their patients, these professionals may be a valuable but underused resource in the evaluation of physicians' humanistic qualities. When asked what activities contributed most to promotion to higher academic rank, faculty in a large midwestern medical school perceived research as the single most important activity.
