Assessing the Impact on Families of Special Needs Children and the Family Dynamic
Kandice Jones
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, American International College
Many people are unaware of the challenges associated with a special needs child being part of the family unit. Special-needs children require additional support and resources to meet their unique needs, which can have significant implications for the entire family. Current research through self-reported study (N = 51) findings under statistical analysis indicate the parents and caregivers having a special needs child as a part of the family unit experience adjusted family dynamics. The families affected by raising a child with special needs would benefit from an intervention that would provide psychoeducation information, tools, and resources to help improve the quality of relationships and dynamics within the family system. This study aims to (1) understand the family dynamics when a special needs child becomes part of the family unit and (2) determine how to make people aware of its impact on the child and the entire family.
