Effective Faculty Empathy for Effective Faculty Development
Swati Ramani
Assessment Update, v36 n6 p10-11, 16 2024
Higher educational institutions often train their faculty on assessment, course development, diversity, equity, inclusion, online teaching, work-life balance, research, and more via faculty development offerings such as programs, workshops, etc. Research shows that faculty development programming helps improve the student learning experience, student retention, graduate placement, student and graduate satisfaction, employer satisfaction, student performance outcomes, and closing equity gaps. Faculty development trainings are often implemented and facilitated via effective project management approaches. The first phase of a project management approach involves "Empathize" (or "Analyze" depending on the approach used). Most of the time, in all faculty training, the training staff usually focuses on being student-centered and refers to empathizing with students at the start. But one step ahead of that is first "Empathizing with the Faculty." That is first to understand the institution's faculty for whom the training is being designed. Often, the training staff misses the "Empathy" phase. This article discusses ways to deeply and effectively empathize with faculty for effective faculty development.
