Bird, Charles P.; Goodwin, C. James – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1974
Two experiments were conducted using the procedure reported by Wickens in 1972 for the study of relevant encoding dimensions in short-term memory. (Editor)
Descriptors: Experimental Psychology, Flow Charts, Inhibition, Memory
Harcum, E. Rae; Shaw, Mary Ruth – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1974
This study investigates detrimental perceptual effects of adding extraneous stimuli to a tachistoscopic pattern. In two experiments, a general inhibitory effect on reproduction accuracy was found, along with a local effect on elements spatially close to the extraneous stimuli. (Editor)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Experimental Psychology, Flow Charts, Psychological Studies
Murray, Harry G.; Ure, Gail – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1974
The major purpose of the present study was to provide a direct comparison of temporal contiguity effects in intentional and incidental PA learning, using the same orienting conditions and ISI values in intentional and incidental learning tasks. (Author)
Descriptors: Experimental Psychology, Flow Charts, Paired Associate Learning, Psychological Studies
Gummerman, Kent; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1974
It has been proposed that the ability of a visual noise mask to stop processing of a target stimulus under backward-masking conditions be gauged by its ability to obscure the target when both stimuli are viewed simultaneously. Authors assessed the usefulness of this proposal. (Editor/RK)
Descriptors: Auditory Perception, Experimental Psychology, Flow Charts, Psychological Studies
Fritzen, James – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1974
The purpose of the present study was to assess whether or not categorized words are of similar benefit to short-term storage (STS). Specifically, can the use of categorized words be demonstrated to alleviate the limited rehearsal capacity of STS? (Author)
Descriptors: Experimental Psychology, Flow Charts, Memory, Psychological Studies
Mazuryk, Gregory F. – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1974
Recent studies suggest that the negative recency effect in final free recall is a function of the type rather than the amount of rehearsal given to terminal list items. From such findings it was predicted that by varying the type of rehearsal, positive recency in final free recall could be obtained. (Editor)
Descriptors: Data Analysis, Experimental Psychology, Flow Charts, Nouns
Ross, Leonard E.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1974
The purpose of the present experiments was to investigate the effects of backward masking on differential eyelid conditioning. (Author)
Descriptors: Auditory Stimuli, Conditioning, Data Analysis, Experimental Psychology
Graesser, Cheryl C.; Anderson, Norman H. – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1974
In two experiments, Ss judged a stimulus person on three dimensions: Generosity, Gift Size, and Income. Judgments on each dimension were based on information about the remaining two dimensions presented in a 4 x 4 design. (Editor)

Effects of Priority Instructions on Processing Hypercapacity Sequential Inputs of Pictures and Words
Kubicek, Lorraine F.; Erdelyi, Matthew Hugh – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1974
The present study investigated directly the perceiver's selective control over the processing of hypercapacity verbal or pictorial inputs. (Author)
Descriptors: Experimental Psychology, Flow Charts, Memory, Pictorial Stimuli
Buchwald, Alexander M.; Meagher, Robert B. – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1974
In Thorndikian experiments, Ss have performed better on Trial 2 when they were told whether Trial 1 responses were right or wrong on Trial 2 than when given this information immediately after each response on Trial 1. Authors reexamined these experiments. (Editor/RK)
Descriptors: Experimental Psychology, Flow Charts, Learning Processes, Psychological Studies
Shanteau, James – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1974
The purpose of this study is to apply an information-processing approach to risky decision judgments using the theory of information integration (Anderson, 1974; Anderson & Shanteau, 1970). (Author)
Descriptors: Decision Making, Experimental Psychology, Flow Charts, Information Processing
Lefton, Lester A.; Spragins, Anne B. – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1974
The basic hypothesis of these experiments was that the processing strategy for the transfer of alphabetic material from iconic storage to short-term memory involves a sequential left-to-right factor that develops with increases in experience with reading. (Author)
Descriptors: Experimental Psychology, Flow Charts, Letters (Alphabet), Memory
Flexser, Arthur J.; Bower, Gordon H. – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1974
The present experiments test two plausible interpretations of the effect of frequency on relative recency judgments. (Editor)
Descriptors: Data Analysis, Experimental Psychology, Flow Charts, Memory
Detterman, Douglas K.; Brown, Jane – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1974
Free-recall (FR) instructions produce substantially different patterns of retention than serial recall (SR) instructions. In the present experiments an effort was made to determine to what extent two factors contribute to the dissimilarities between FR and SR. (Author/RK)
