The types of vocabulary in three short novels were analyzed to determine the text coverage of the most frequent 2,000 words of English, and the vocabulary needed to gain 97-98% coverage of the running words in each text. A study of student reading habits at a Papua New Guinea university revealed that students read little professional material unless they were to be tested on it. Preferred reading materials were comics and fiction. Encouragement of reading habits in a country with only a recent written tradition is recommended. (MSE)
