Belfry, Glen R.; Paterson, Don H.; Thomas, Scott G. – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 2020
Purpose and Methods: To compare the effects of a set of 12--30 min, maximal effort, constant load cycle bouts (HICT) to 12 short work: shorter rest (10 s: 5 s) interval sessions (INT) of similar duration and effort, performed on alternate days over 4 weeks, on performance and V?O[subscript 2] l.min[superscript -1]. INT sessions consisted of…

Geard, David; Rebar, Amanda L.; Dionigi, Rylee A.; Rathbone, Evelyne; Reaburn, Peter – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 2021
Purpose: To compare the effect of 12-weeks of cycling training and competition versus recreational cycling on successful aging across physical, psychological, cognitive, and social functioning domains in mid-aged adults. Methods: Recreational cyclists were randomly assigned to an intervention (n = 13, M age = 47.18 years) and comparison (n = 13, M…

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a growing epidemic related with higher values of blood pressure (BP) and autonomic dysfunction. Scientific evidence has been indicating that functional resistance training (FRT) is superior over conventional (CRT) for muscle fatigue and pain, yet its effects on autonomic modulation (AM), BP and heart rate in MetS are…

Schedler, Simon; Brock, Katharina; Fleischhauer, Fabian; Kiss, Rainer; Muehlbauer, Thomas – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 2020
Purpose: In youth, cross-sectional studies reported age differences in balance performance that were in favor of adolescents. Thus, trainability of balance performance might be different in children compared to adolescents. The purpose of this study was therefore to compare the effects of balance training (BT) on balance performance between…

Hastie, Peter A.; Calderón, Antonio; Rolim, Ramiro J.; Guarino, Anthony J. – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 2013
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relative effectiveness of 2 forms of physical education instruction on students' skill and technical performance, as well as content knowledge in 3 track and field events. Method: Students from 6 classes in 3 Portuguese schools completed 900-min units conducted under the auspices of sport…

Leverrier, Celine; Gauthier, Antoine; Nicolas, Arnaud; Molinaro, Corinne – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 2011
The purpose of this study was to observe the effects of a submaximal isometric training program on estimation capacity at 25, 50, and 75% of maximal contraction in isometric action and at two angular velocities. The second purpose was to study the variability of isometric action. To achieve these purposes, participants carried out an isokinetic…

Lee, Timothy D.; Genovese, Elizabeth D. – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 1989
Results from a study involving 80 undergraduates indicate that acquisition and retention of a motor skill, developed through practice of a movement timing task, were facilitated by distributed practice on the continuous task, but by massed practice on the discrete task. (IAH)

Saito, Mitsuru – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 1982
The velocity, stroke rate, and distance per stroke of l68 male high school students in Japan were studied before and after they received training in the breaststroke. The increase in their swimming velocity resulted from an increase in the distance covered per stroke, not from a faster stroke rate. (Author/PP)
