The pass/fail results of 44 North American medical specialty certification examinations are compared and analyzed. Failure rates for comparable North American and FMG candidates were higher on Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada examinations than on equivalent U.S. tests. (Author/LBH)

Graduates of "fifth pathway" programs at medical schools in New York state between 1976-1978 were studied to determine their professional careers and choice of medical specialties. Fifth pathway graduates, 95 percent from Mexican medical schools, were more likely to select nonprimary care than primary care specialties. (Author/MLW)

The increase in the number of women and the decline in the number of foreign medical graduates in U.S. medicine were studied by comparing the specialty distributions of house officers in the 1973-74 and 1979-80 training years. A survey of the number and distribution of women physicians in a nonmetropolitan area of Illinois is discussed. Graduates of foreign medical schools, the majority with physician relatives also from foreign schools, were found to constitute a sizable portion of the women physician pool in the smallest counties. A study of 550 Americans who took the examination sponsored by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates in 1972 after or while attending foreign medical schools revealed that ten years after graduation, 70 have never qualified for American graduate medical education and 61 more have not become licensed practitioners.
