Graduates of "fifth pathway" programs at medical schools in New York state between 1976-1978 were studied to determine their professional careers and choice of medical specialties. A study supported use of the objective structured clinical examination for screening foreign medical graduates (n=67) wishing to enter a preinternship program in at the University of Toronto. An examination was developed by the Medical Skills Committee of the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates to test the hypothesis that the clinical skills of many foreign medical graduates entering U.S. residencies are deficient.
