In 1983, members of Cornell University's Class of '73 raised an all-American record in reunion gifts. How they got the participation, the high giving levels, and the first-time givers are discussed. Colleges are using "prospect research" to gather information about and cultivate prospective wealthy donors, but the methods and their success are raising ethical questions about the donors' rights to privacy and the confidentiality of information about them. (MSE)

Planned or deferred giving (through which a donor to a college or university contributes capital in the form of an annuity, life-income trust, insurance policy, pooled income fund, real estate, or other asset, to the institution but retains its financial benefit during his lifetime) is an increasingly popular form of donation to endowments. Lee Iacocca is steering his alma mater's drive to raise money to develop a facility for linking the university's two campuses, housing programs on regional and national economic development, and establishing an institute for research on economic competitiveness. (MSE)

Many corporations are considering limits on how much they spend to match their employees' gifts to colleges. In response to abuses, corporations and colleges have tightened the administration of matching-gift programs, which in turn has contributed to the increased costs of running them. (MLW)

The United Negro College Fund faces questions about the quality of its institutions and questions from some of its own presidents about how well it represents their interests. The Fund now helps its members improve their management, get more federal aid, build their endowments, recruit students, and gain reaccreditation. (MLW)

Fund raising for private colleges has been successful in New Jersey because it no longer focuses on unrestricted corporate gifts as many do but seeks support from a broader variety of sources. State aid gained in this way is a radical and possibly life-saving innovation. (MSE)

A coalition of 650 grant-making and non-profit organizations has begun a drive to double charitable giving by individuals in the United States and increase by 50% their volunteer activities by 1991, using national advertising and grassroots activities and focusing on the current highest givers of time and money. New state laws governing charitable solicitations may soon place restrictions on college phonathons and other fund-raising activities. The Supreme Court will hear arguments in March on a 1985 North Carolina solicitations law and the decision could affect many fund-raising activities of colleges and nonprofit organizations. (MLW)

Community colleges are making more aggressive and sophisticated efforts to raise funds from private sources because of federal, state, and local funding cutbacks, and some institutions are having substantial success. (MSE)

Many corporations have stopped giving unrestricted gifts to colleges, preferring to support college activities relating to their own businesses. The trend is causing substantial changes in the direction of private-college fund-raising efforts and organizations. (MSE)

A year-old foundation at the Georgia Institute of Technology is the first in the country that is entirely student-operated. Students have raised over $150,000 for its endowment, managed its assets, and used interest on the money to finance almost $6,000 in grants for 10 new student projects. (MSE)

Gallaudet University is beginning a program using computer-assisted telephone fund-raising solicitations of alumni, in a promising use of communications technology. (MSE)

States are being urged to require non-profit organizations including colleges and universities to take greater responsibility for those who raise funds in their name, and to report their fund-raising activities in much more detail. In the past, colleges have been exempted from such laws. (MLW)
