Faith, Finances, and Fundraising: A Perspective among Presidents at Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Institutions of Higher Education
Lori Ann Vinson Summers
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, North Greenville University
With its unique perspective, this phenomenological study focused on the challenges college presidents face in fundraising at Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) institutions of higher education. As financial pressures grew, fundraising became a central responsibility for presidents, particularly in faith-based institutions where balancing mission and financial sustainability was crucial. Through interviews with eight ELCA college presidents, the study examined how they navigated fundraising challenges influenced by Environmental, Institutional, Personal, and Role Forces, as conceptualized by Cook and Lasher (1996). The findings highlighted the importance of aligning institutional mission with donor priorities and adapting leadership strategies to meet evolving financial demands. This research offered unique insights and recommendations for current and future presidents on effectively managing fundraising in faith-based higher education, setting it apart from other studies in the field.
