F. M. S. Lima – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2025
In this short note I present an elementary proof of irrationality for the number "e," the base of the natural logarithm. It is simpler than other known proofs as it does not use comparisons with geometric series, nor Beukers' integrals, and it does not assume that "e" is a rational number from the beginning.

Johanna Schoenherr; Stanislaw Schukajlow – ZDM: Mathematics Education, 2024
External visualization (i.e., physically embodied visualization) is central to the teaching and learning of mathematics. As external visualization is an important part of mathematics at all levels of education, it is diverse, and research on external visualization has become a wide and complex field. The aim of this scoping review is to…

Yan, Xiaoheng; Zazkis, Rina – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2022
Windmill images and shapes have a long history in geometry and can be found in problems in different mathematical contexts. In this paper, we share and discuss various problems involving windmill shapes and solutions from geometry, algebra, to elementary number theory. These problems can be used, separately or together, for students to explore…

Simsek, Zulfiye Zeybek – International Journal for Mathematics Teaching and Learning, 2020
This study focused on investigating the ability of 58 pre-service mathematics teachers (PSMTs) to construct-evaluate-refine mathematical conjectures and proofs. The PSMTs enrolled in a three-credit mathematics education course that offered various opportunities to engage with mathematical activities including constructing-evaluating-refining…

Teia, Luis – Australian Senior Mathematics Journal, 2018
In mathematics, three integer numbers or triples have been shown to govern a specific geometrical balance between triangles and squares. The first to study triples were probably the Babylonians, followed by Pythagoras some 1500 years later (Friberg, 1981). This geometrical balance relates parent triples to child triples via the central square…

Soares, A.; dos Santos, A. L. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2017
In this article, we revisit the concept of strong differentiability of real functions of one variable, underlying the concept of differentiability. Our discussion is guided by the Straddle Lemma, which plays a key role in this context. The proofs of the results presented are designed to meet a young audience in mathematics, typical of students in…

Sachs, Robert – PRIMUS, 2017
A new transition course centered on complex topics would help in revitalizing complex analysis in two ways: first, provide early exposure to complex functions, sparking greater interest in the complex analysis course; second, create extra time in the complex analysis course by eliminating the "complex precalculus" part of the course. In…

Breda, Ana Maria D'azevedo; Dos Santos, José Manuel Dos Santos – Teaching Mathematics and Its Applications, 2016
Complex functions, generally feature some interesting peculiarities, seen as extensions of real functions. The visualization of complex functions properties usually requires the simultaneous visualization of two-dimensional spaces. The multiple Windows of GeoGebra, combined with its ability of algebraic computation with complex numbers, allow the…

Marcella-Burdett, Jennifer; Roth, Alexa; Savelkouls, Sophie; Zur, Osnat – WestEd, 2020
This report summarizes the findings across two case studies conducted as part of WestEd's evaluation of the California Statewide Early Math Initiative (CAEMI). The case studies aimed to understand the planning and implementation of professional learning and coaching in local communities. They also examined changes in educators' math knowledge,…

Alves, Francisco Regis Vieira – Acta Didactica Napocensia, 2016
Admittedly, the study of Complex Analysis (CA) requires of the student considerable mental effort characterized by the mobilization of a related thought to the complex mathematical concepts. Thus, with the aid of the dynamic system Geogebra, we discuss in this paper a particular concept in CA. In fact, the notion of winding number v[f(gamma),P] =…

Gökkurt, Burçin; Erdem, Emrullah; Basibüyük, Kani; Sahin, Ömer; Soylu, Yasin – Educational Research Quarterly, 2017
The aim of this study was to examine the mistakes made by freshman students of science teaching during the process of proving and the reasons for these mistakes. To this aim, the study, which was conducted via the case study method, was performed with 52 freshman students who were studying at the department of science teaching in a state…

de Moura Fonseca, Daila Silva Seabra; de Oliveira Lino Franchi, Regina Helena – Teaching Mathematics and Its Applications, 2016
This study addresses the embodied approach of convergence of numerical sequences using the GeoGebra software. We discuss activities that were applied in regular calculus classes, as a part of a research which used a qualitative methodology and aimed to identify contributions of the development of activities based on the embodiment of concepts,…

Toh, Pee Choon; Leong, Yew Hoong; Toh, Tin Lam; Ho, Foo Him – North American Chapter of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, 2014
The purpose of this study is to develop design principles for crafting tasks that will encourage conjecturing and proving in the context of elementary number theory at the undergraduate level. From the analyses of the written work of 46 prospective mathematics teachers on a task designed according to these principles, we think that there is…

Brendefur, Jonathan L.; Thiede, Keith; Strother, Sam; Bunning, Kim; Peck, Duane – Journal of Curriculum and Teaching, 2013
In the present research, we evaluated the effectiveness of a multi-year professional development program in mathematics for elementary teachers. Each year the program focused on a different domain of mathematics. We found the program increased teachers' knowledge of (a) number and operations, (b) measurement and geometry, and (c) probability and…
