Mathematical Gazette, 1971
This column contains brief notes on graphing in three dimensions; patterns in Pascal's triangle; plotting graphs by computer; and an application of the hypocycloid. (MM)
Descriptors: Calculus, Computers, Geometry, Graphs

Hawkins, Wayne – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 1991
Provided is a set of six activities demonstrating how mathematical connections can be made using the concept of rectangle. The activities relating rectangle to factoring whole numbers, prime numbers, and calculating the area of rectangles, triangles, parallelograms, and circles, are also connected to each other. (MDH)
Descriptors: Area, Elementary Secondary Education, Enrichment Activities, Geometric Concepts

Muscat, Jean-Paul – Mathematics in School, 1992
Explores the close relationship between pattern formation and traditional geometry using the LOGO programing language with the specific example of joining squares, corner to corner, to form a closed ring. Includes the LOGO programs utilized, as well as color illustrations of the interesting and eye-catching patterns generated. (JJK)
Descriptors: Geometric Concepts, Geometry, Instructional Materials, Learning Activities

Eperson, D. B. – Mathematics in School, 1991
This section includes eight problems to which the journal invites readers to respond. Problem topics include angles in alternate segments, pentominoes, a new triangle of numbers, cricket scores, symmetrical pentagons, inequalities, a pythagorean dissection, and magic squares. (MDH)
Descriptors: Enrichment Activities, Geometry, Inequality (Mathematics), Learning Activities

Ericksen, Donna B.; Frank, Martha L. – Mathematics in School, 1991
Quilt-making is presented as an activity that helps elementary school children recognize and appreciate geometry in their world while developing their problem-solving skills. Students choose an appropriate pattern and cooperatively make the quilt. Related measurement questions and problems are provided. (MDH)
Descriptors: Elementary Education, Enrichment Activities, Experiential Learning, Geometric Concepts

Clason, Robert G. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1991
A mult tile is a set of polygons each of which can be dissected into smaller polygons similar to the original set of polygons. Using a recursive LOGO method that requires solutions to various geometry and trigonometry problems, dissections of mult tiles are carried out repeatedly to produce tile patterns. (MDH)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Discovery Processes, Geometry, Mathematical Enrichment

McLeay, Heather; Abas, Jan – Mathematics in School, 1991
Described are some classroom experiences teaching the concept of symmetry by having students create frieze patterns using the computer software "mosaic." Examples produced by 14-year-old students are presented, and student thinking in developing the friezes is discussed. (MDH)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Uses in Education, Creative Thinking, Creativity

Wheatley, Grayson H., Ed. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1992
Discusses a variation on tiling that offers opportunities for the construction of the fundamental mathematical concept of constructing abstract units called "unitizing." Tiling integrates geometric and numerical settings to develop spatial sense and present mathematics as constructing patterns. (MDH)
Descriptors: Abstract Reasoning, Cognitive Processes, Concept Formation, Elementary Education

Pagni, David L. – Mathematics Teacher, 1991
Presented is an activity that explores the relationship between the size of a rectangle and the number of squares intersected by a diagonal. Students incorporate pattern recognition and the concept of the greatest common divisor in solving the problem. A sample worksheet is provided. (MDH)
Descriptors: Discovery Learning, Elementary Secondary Education, Enrichment Activities, Geometry

Arvold, Bridget – Mathematics Educator, 1993
Describes four activities to develop visualization skills and the concept of dimensionality in which students (1) visualize transforming figures between the second and third dimensions; (2) identify the three-dimensional objects from their two-dimensional projections; (3) conjecture about the vertices, edges, and faces of zero- to four-dimensional…
Descriptors: Discovery Processes, Elementary Secondary Education, Enrichment Activities, Geometric Concepts
Trowell, Judith M., Ed. – 1990
This material was produced by a task force of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics to provide independent study projects for use in grades four through six. The major goals are as follows: (1) to encourage student research, investigation, and communication of mathematics through reporting and writing; (2) to provide activities that are…
Descriptors: Computation, Computer Uses in Education, Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics

Miller, William A. – Mathematics Teacher, 1991
Provided is a teacher's guide for a problem-solving activity that establishes a link between number patterns and geometry by focusing on the development of recurrence relations established when generating central polygonal numbers. Reproducible worksheets and a 3.0 BASIC program for the activity are given. (MDH)
Descriptors: Algebra, Cooperative Learning, Discovery Learning, Enrichment Activities
Coxford, Arthur F., Jr. – 1991
The 1989 document, "Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics" provides a vision and a framework for revising and strengthening the K-12 mathematics curriculum in North American schools and for evaluating both the mathematics curriculum and students' progress. When completed, it is expected that the Addenda Series will…

Immerzeel, George, Comp.; Thomas, Melvin, Comp. – 1982
This compilation is drawn from the IDEAS section that has been a feature of the "Arithmetic Teacher" since 1971. The contents are arranged in the following categories: Computation, Fractions and Decimals, Developing Number Patterns, Using Flowcharts, Problem Solving, Geometry, and Metric Measure. All selections are reprinted just as they…

Burton, Grace; And Others – 1991
The "Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics" (1989) provides a vision and a framework for revising and strengthening the K-12 mathematics curriculum in North American schools and for evaluating both the mathematics curriculum and students' progress. The document not only addresses what mathematics students should…
