Summarizes research concerning the disengagement theory of aging and examines awareness of finitude. Interviews with residents of old-age institutions revealed awareness of finitude to be a better predictor of disengagement than chronological age. Future research should examine this predictor in noninstitutional settings. (Author)

In a review of studies using the Facts on Aging Quiz (FAQ), group reliability was high, but item reliability was low. Less educated groups were more biased against the elderly. In some ways the revised FAQ supports the Palmore scale, while compensating for its weaknesses. (JAC)

Successful aging is defined as survival to age 75 with good health and happiness. The best predictors of successful aging are initial health and happiness. The strongest explanatory factors were secondary group activities and physical activities, which may contribute to successful aging. (Author)
