The Art Museum as a Training Ground for Residents in Nuclear Medicine and Radiology
Journal of Museum Education, v50 n1 p26-39 2025
For the past seven years, we -- a museum educator and an academic radiologist -- have co-taught Seeing in Art and Medical Imaging, a first-of-its-kind medical humanities curriculum for residents in nuclear medicine and radiology based at the Harvard Art Museums. The program aims to foster residents' close looking and clinical skills, self-reflection, and humanistic qualities. Here we describe some of the ways we engage trainee imaging physicians with works of art to help them prepare for a fulfilling, engaged, and sustainable career. We also offer some initial takeaways from the program's anecdotal data. Finally, we discuss the "Seeing in Art and Medicine" exhibition, on view at the Harvard Art Museums in Fall 2023, which gave the public a window into this work.
