Ekin, Sabit; O'Hara, John F.; Turgut, Emrah; Colston, Nicole; Young, Jeffrey L. – IEEE Transactions on Education, 2021
Contribution: A do-it-yourself (DIY) light wave sensing (LWS) and communication project was developed to generate interest and clarify basic electromagnetic (EM) and wireless sensing/communication concepts among students at different education levels from middle school to undergraduate. This article demonstrates the nature of the project and its…

Suhr, Wilfried – European Journal of Physics, 2012
The interest in the phenomenon of frustrated total internal reflection dates back to the time of Newton. Because of its technological relevance, it has become a standard topic covered by advanced courses in physics. In practical courses optical setups especially designed to demonstrate the phenomenon are commonly used. As an alternative, this…

Pavel, Ioana E.; Alnajjar, Khadijeh S.; Monahan, Jennifer L.; Stahler, Adam; Hunter, Nora E.; Weaver, Kent M.; Baker, Joshua D.; Meyerhoefer, Allie J.; Dolson, David A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2012
A novel laboratory experiment was successfully implemented for undergraduate and graduate students in physical chemistry and nanotechnology. The main goal of the experiment was to rigorously determine the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based sensing capabilities of colloidal silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). These were quantified by…

Bentley, Anne K.; Weaver, Gabriela C.; Russell, Cianan B.; Fornes, William L.; Choi, Kyoung-Shin; Shih, Susan M. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
A simple and cost-effective experiment for the development and characterization of semiconductors using Uv-vis spectroscopy is described. The study shows that the optical properties of ZnO films can be easily modified by forming Zn[subscript 1-x] Co[subscript x]O solid solutions via spray pyrolysis.

Ciferno, Thomas M.; And Others – Physics Teacher, 1995
Describes the construction and use of an electrooptic apparatus that can be incorporated into the classroom to test liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and introduce students to experiments of an applied physics nature with very practical implications. Presents experiments that give students hands-on experience with technologies of current interest to…
