Wahine Defining College Success: The Wisdom of Mana Wahine at UH Maui College

This qualitative, ethnographic case study investigated the journeys of three mana wahine who earned a certificate or degree from the University of Hawai'i Maui College. The study aimed to understand how these wahine characterized their success in this community college. The study also identified the influencers that contributed to their achievements. Key findings included the importance of 'olelo, 'ike, and nohona Hawai'i as well as Hawaiian heritage in boosting their self-esteem. Other factors that contributed to their success were: support systems, feeling and achieving success, advocacy, a louder voice, and journey of discovery.
