Indigenous peoples embody their sovereignty in higher education through their ancestors and deities. The author reflects and shares his personal experiences as a Hawaiian in higher education, and asks the question, "How do we Indigenize the social sciences for the future?" He utilizes an ?o¯lelo no?eau (proverb) - ?o ka wa¯ ma mua, ?o ka wa¯ ma hope, looking to the time before (ancestral knowledge) for guidance in how to move forward, as a framework to imagine the possibilities for the future. He highlights three goals he believes will positively impact and benefit Indigenous peoples in higher education: (1) Increase Native Hawaiian Faculty in the College of Social Sciences; (2) Develop and Offer New Courses and Specializations in Hawaiian and Indigenous Social Sciences; and (3) Develop a Native Hawaiian Graduate Support Program. Indigenous peoples need the institution to commit continuous resources to actualize the imaginations of the ancestors and predecessors that have paved the foundation and pathways to higher education.
