Lewis, Michael A. – 1983
The booklet is intended to provide practical information on hearing aids for hearing impaired children, their families and teachers. Illustrations are provided to describe the hearing process. The nature of hearing loss is considered in terms of types (conductive, sensori-neural, and mixed), causes, degrees, and educational implications. Four…

Veloso, Kathleen; And Others – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1990
No differences were observed between six adults and six six-year-olds in measures of frequency selectivity and comodulation masking release. Children were less able to detect signals in noise backgrounds where the signal had perceptual qualities similar to the noise or in noise backgrounds having high degrees of fluctuation. (Author/JDD)

Karzon, Roanne G. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1991
Sensitivity and specificity of static acoustic admittance (SAA) and tympanometric width (TW) were assessed for 116 pediatric patients. A statistically significant change in SAA was observed in immediate repeat measures. No significant change across the two sequential measures was observed for TW, peak pressure, or the estimate of ear canal volume.…

Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (DHHS/PHS), Rockville, MD. – 1994
Otitis media with effusion and its related hearing loss have been associated with delayed language development, particularly if the disease is recurrent or of long duration, although available data are insufficient to establish a causal linkage. This guide presents recommendations based on extensive reviews of the relevant medical and…

Model Secondary School for the Deaf, Washington, DC. – 1986
The curriculum was developed to help hearing impaired high school students understand hearing loss and its effects on communication skills as well as to develop strategies and find resources for building communication skills. Course materials are divided into six sections: (1) sound and hearing (concepts of sound, the anatomy and physiology of the…

Lucas, Linda M. – Science and Children, 1991
Presents hands-on science activities that help students learn the concepts of hearing and sound while allowing students to practice science process skills. Students investigate the use of alternative phonograph speakers and needles and apply the knowledge learned to the construction of one-string banjos. (MDH)
Descriptors: Acoustics, Elementary Education, Hearing (Physiology), Musical Instruments
Kallett, Tony – Learning, 1975
Describes the musical sounds which can be found in unexpected places, and presents classroom projects which will enable heretofore visually oriented students and teachers to rediscover their ears. (BD)
Descriptors: Acoustical Environment, Acoustics, Auditory Perception, Auditory Stimuli

Reeves, Charles A. – Science Teacher, 1979
Describes a project for sixth-grade science class students designed to encourage them to save energy at home, and to calculate the savings on their monthly bill. (GA)

Friel-Patti, Sandy; Finitzo, Terese – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1990
The relationship between children's early experience with otitis media with effusion, hearing over time, and emerging receptive and expressive language skills was assessed. Better language was found to be associated with better average hearing levels, suggesting that the relationship between otitis media with effusion and language is mediated by…

Rohland, Pamela; Lang, Harry G. – Science and Children, 1983
Describes a science unit on hearing impairment which combines scientific concepts related to sound while demystifying deafness. Topics include lipreading (and what it shows), frequency/pitch, intensity, hearing aids, and audiograms. The unit is valuable whether or not a hearing-impaired child is about to enter the classroom. (JN)

McAllister, Elizabeth A.; Hildebrand, Joan M.; Ericson, Joann H. – 1999
This book is part of a series of books presenting ready-to-use instructional units on themes typically taught in the primary grades. The topics focus on science, math, social studies or literature, but use language arts skills consistently in each unit. Each book in the series also uses as many frames of mind or intelligences as possible. Within a…

California State Board of Corrections, Sacramento. – 1985
In response to a mandate from the California State Legislature, the California Board of Corrections conducted a three-phase research study in preparation for the revision and standardization of the current state standards for hiring and training corrections personnel. This document presents the vision and hearing guidelines for the occupations of…

Flexer, Carol; And Others – Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools, 1989
This article provides information from three areas critical to classroom success for mainstreamed hearing-impaired children: understanding hearing and the impact of hearing loss on classroom learning; promoting the use of signal-to-noise ratio enhancing equipment (typically Frequency Modulation units); and using educational management strategies…

Olson, Dianne R. – 1995
This curriculum was designed to help teachers teach their fourth-grade students about hearing and the effects of loud noises on hearing. The program describes the human ear and how it works, explains the health effects of noise, and offers ways for students to protect their hearing from unsafe noise levels. Students are taught how hearing is…

Cutietta, Robert A.; And Others – Journal of Research in Music Education, 1994
Reports on a study to compare the hearing acuity of three groups of music teachers: (1) vocal; (2) elementary instrumental; and (3) high school instrumental. Finds some risk of hearing loss among high school band directors, but that the degree of risk varies widely among individuals. (CFR)
