Seewald, Richard C.; And Others – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1985
The relationship between each of seven predictor variables and the relative degree to which 84 normal and hearing-impaired children used audition or vision in their perception of word stimuli were investigated. It was concluded that the relative use of audition was almost completely related to their auditory capabilities. (Author/CL)

Hack, Zarita Caplan; Erber, Norman P. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1982
Vowels were presented through auditory, visual, and auditory-visual modalities to 18 hearing impaired children (12 to 15 years old) having good, intermediate, and poor auditory word recognition skills. All the groups had difficulty with acoustic information and visual information alone. The first two groups had only moderate difficulty identifying…

Erber, Norman P. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1979
In studies with 22 normal hearing adults and two hearing impaired children (12-13 years old), speech was presented under different degrees of optical distortion. (CL)

Raney, Lynne; And Others – Volta Review, 1984
Analysis of the data showed no significant correlation between scores from the two modalities, indicating that knowledge of a person's ability to understand speech in one system provides little information about the same person's ability to understand speech in the other. (Author/CL)

Stone, Patrick – Volta Review, 1983
Twenty-one hearing-impaired children (6- to 14-years-old) who had received unisensory instruction for at least three years were administered a series of syllable reception tests. Subjects showed significantly more improvement when audition was added to visual reception than has been shown in previous studies of children educated in "multisensory"…

MacDougall, J. C. – American Annals of the Deaf, 1979
An experiment, involving 37 deaf and 36 hearings Ss (aged 10-12 and 15-18 years), was conducted to determine the role of visual and auditory processing in deaf and hearing children using a short-term memory paradigm. (Author/SBH)

Jones, Carol S. – 1981
A teacher of hearing impaired students describes an approach to oral composition in which a student's sign language telling of a story was videotaped and then students were asked to write a draft on their topic. Results demonstrated the need to focus on coherence through the use of transitions. She suggests that benefits of the video-oral drafting…

GAETH, JOHN H. – 1966
THIS STUDY WAS THE SECOND PART OF AN INVESTIGATION OF VERBAL LEARNING IN CHILDREN, THE FIRST PART BEING CONCERNED WITH THE EFFECTS OF AUDITORY, VISUAL, AND COMBINED AUDIOVISUAL PRESENTATIONS UPON THE LEARNING OF VARIOUS KINDS OF MATERIALS IN A PAIRED-ASSOCIATE PARADIGM. THIS PORTION OF THE STUDY INVOLVED AN EXTENSIVE INVESTIGATION OF THE…

Schwartz, Judy I. – Academic Therapy, 1979
The importance of competence in both receptive and expressive language, selective perception, and a rich experiential background for reading readiness skills of hearing impaired children is empahsized. (CL)

Oyer, Herbert J.; Frankmann, Judith P. – 1973
Programed training filmstrips from Project LIFE (Language Instruction to Facilitate Education) were used with 114 hearing impaired children and 15 normal hearing language impaired children (4- to 13-years old) to assess the effects of auditory supplementation and a token reinforcement program on language learning and to investigate retention and…
