Larson, Celia O.; And Others – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1985
Pairs of undergraduate students were instructed to engage in metacognitive activities, elaborative activities, or neither while listening to prose passages. Results of a recall test suggested that metacognitive activity facilitated cooperative learning, while elaborative activity transferred to a later individual learning activity. (Author/GDC)

Rittschof, Kent A.; Griffin, Marlynn M.; Custer, Wendy L. – International Journal of Instructional Media, 1998
Describes a study that examined five influences on college students' schemata to determine what affected their ability to make effective use of instructional thematic maps. Topics include use of the Group Embedded Figures Test to determine field dependence/independence; sex differences; student preferences for data representation types; and…

Adejumo, Dayo – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1983
The effect of cognitive style on the performance of four groups of college students (n=326) who used different strategies of study to comprehend prose was investigated. The cognitive styles of the subjects (field dependence/independence) interacted with the strategies of study and seem to affect performance on comprehension of prose at posttest.…

Annis, Linda F. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1979
Field-independent and dependent students read or took notes on a logically organized or scrambed article. Field-independent students scored better than field-dependent students on items of high structural importance to the meaning of the passage. Cognitive style effects on material of low structural importance were not significant. (Author/RD)
Descriptors: Cognitive Style, Content Analysis, Higher Education, Learning Activities

Dwyer, Francis M.; Moore, David M. – Journal of Educational Technology Systems, 1992
Describes a study of undergraduate students at Pennsylvania State University that was conducted to assess the impact of instructional color coding on visually and verbally oriented tests and on field dependence independence. Use of the GEFT (Group Embedded Figures Test) is discussed, and differences in cognitive processes are considered. (11…

Liu, Min; Reed, W. Michael – Computers in Human Behavior, 1994
Reports on a study that examined different learning strategies used by 63 Field-independent (FI) people and Field-dependent (FD) international college students in a hypermedia assisted language learning setting. Findings that describe the different types of media, tools, and learning aids chosen by FI and FD students are reported. (27 references)…

Lusk, Edward J.; Wright, Haviland – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1981
Results are presented which suggest that the learning occurring between two sections of the Group Embedded Fiqures Test is independent of the order in which the sections are worked. (Author/GK)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Higher Education, Learning, Scores

Small, Ruth V.; Grabowski, Barbara L. – Journal of Educational Multimedia and Hypermedia, 1992
Describes a study that identified various individual information seeking behavior patterns and determined how users' motivation, prior knowledge, gender, and cognitive processing influenced learning and retention within a hypermedia environment for undergraduate students. Use of the Group Embedded Figures Test is described and further research is…

Portis, Sarah C.; And Others – 1993
Cognitive style is an important variable that can affect the educational process in several ways. This study, a continuation of previous research, considers two learning styles--field dependent (FD) and field independent (FI). FD learners are attuned to social interaction; they favor structure, teacher direction, and feedback; and they benefit…

Canino, Casilda; Cicchelli, Terry – Journal of Educational Computing Research, 1988
Describes aptitude treatment interaction study that used the cognitive styles field dependence and independence matched with computerized algorithmic and discovery treatments to determine mathematics achievement on a criterion-referenced test. Posttest mathematics scores and student responses to the computer are analyzed, and mastery learning is…

Spiro, Rand J.; Tirre, William C. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1980
Discourse processing involves an interaction of text based processes and prior knowledge. It was shown that college students varied in their relative employment of knowledge-based processes, and that individuals tended to be more "text bound" when they were more "stimulus bound" according to an embedded figures test.…

McDonald, Barbara A.; And Others – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1985
In two experiments, college student pairs who were given a systematic strategy for learning cooperatively from a text were compared with pairs who created their own strategies and with individuals who used the systematic or their own strategy. The cooperative learning strategy facilitated both initial learning and transfer. (Author/GDC)

Highhouse, Scott; Doverspike, Dennis – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1987
This study investigated the relationship between cognitive style, occupational preference, and learning modes. Kolb's Revised Learning Style Inventory (1985), the Group Embedded Figures Test, and the Vocational Choice Inventory were administered to 111 undergraduate students. (Author/GDC)
Descriptors: Career Choice, Cognitive Style, Cognitive Tests, Construct Validity

Lambiotte, Judith G.; And Others – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1987
Seventy-four introductory psychology students were subjects in a study evaluating the impact of cooperative interactions during studying and test taking. Results indicated that cooperative study training affects performance favorably. Cooperative test-taking training also affected recall performance favorably, for the amount of information…

Brooks, Larry W.; And Others – 1981
The present study evaluated the effectiveness of embedded headings, with and without instructions on their usage, as processing aids for text material. It was expected that the Instructions/Headings group would outperform both the Headings Only and Control (no instructions or headings) groups, and that the performance of the Headings Only group…
