Camille Kandiko Howson, Editor; Martyn Kingsbury, Editor – UCL Press, 2024
In "Belonging and Identity in STEM Higher Education," leading scholars, teachers, practitioners and students explore belonging and identity in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields, and how this is impacted by disciplinary changes and the post-pandemic higher education context. In STEM fields, positivist…

Fanelli, A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1986
Since activity coefficients are difficult even for good students to understand from the normal presentations in undergraduate physical chemistry, the author has reanalyzed this concept and presents a new way for introducing it. A practice problem (with solution) is included. (JN)

Seaborg, Glenn T. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
Discusses the unusual chemistry of the transuranium elements as well as their impact on the periodic table. Also considers the practical applications of transuranium isotopes, such as their use in nuclear fuel for the large-scale generation of electricity. (JN)

Gough, W. – Physics Education, 1986
Examines the volume distribution of electrical charge and charge thickness on the surface of a metallic sphere, and compares the results with a sphere made of a perfect insulator. (JM)

Danciger, Michael – Journal of College Science Teaching, 1986
By using a computer program to identify bacteria, students sharpen their analytical skills and gain familiarity with procedures used in laboratories outside the university. Although it is ideal for identifying a bacterium, the program can be adapted to many other disciplines. (Author)

Friedrich, Edwin C.; Runkle, Katherine Gates – Journal of Chemical Education, 1984
Presents an internally consistent set of 63 substituent constants developed for use with the Schoolery Relationship to predict the chemical shifts of methylene protons of acyclic compounds. Chemical shift data used in deriving the constants were taken mainly from primary sources of HNMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) spectra. (JN)

Kristjansson, L. – Physics Teacher, 1985
Discusses the drafting of lines of force and equipotentials in static potential fields, examining the general properties of equipotentials and field lines, diagrams from the literature, and the field of equal charges of opposite sign. Examples used are from both American and European textbooks. (JN)

Suslick, Kenneth S. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
A versatile point system for grade assignments that allows students to choose the type of performance to be evaluated is described. Features and advantages of using the grading system in both graduate and undergraduate courses are noted. (JN)

March, B. E. – BioScience, 1984
Discusses various bioethical issues and problems related to animal welfare and animal rights. Areas examined include: Aristotelian views; animal welfare legislation; Darwin and evolutionary theory; animal and human behavior; and vegetarianism. A 14-point universal declaration of the rights of animals is included. (JN)

Costanzo, Samuel J. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1984
Clarifies where in the scheme of modern chromatography high performance thin layer chromatography (TLC) fits and why in some situations it is a viable alternative to gas and high performance liquid chromatography. New TLC plates, sample applications, plate development, and instrumental techniques are considered. (JN)

Schomaker, Verner; Lingafelter, E. C. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
Discusses characteristics of crystal systems, comparing (in table format) crystal systems with lattice types, number of restrictions, nature of the restrictions, and other lattices that can accidently show the same metrical symmetry. (JN)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Crystallography, Higher Education

Rothenberg, Marc – OSIRIS, 1985
Examines the development of American astronomy by discussing: general studies on the subject; early efforts through 1825; establishing foundations (1825-1875); the transitional period (1875-1945); and the space age (1945 to the present). Points out that the field is underdeveloped with a need for additional work. (JN)

Servos, John W. – OSIRIS, 1985
Discusses the development of chemistry in the United States by considering: (1) chemistry as an evolving body of ideas/techniques, and as a set of conceptual resources affecting and affected by the development of other sciences; and (2) chemistry related to the history of American social and economic institutions and practices. (JN)

Serra, Juan L.; And Others – Biochemical Education, 1986
Deduces the relationship between reduced velocity and molar fractions for productive enzyme complexes; obtains the mathematical expression of molar fractions for an enzyme with two specific binding sites per molecule; and proposes a useful plot to follow the dependence of enzyme molar fractions with the concentration of one of its ligands. (JN)

Brusca, Stephen – Physics Education, 1985
Examines the question "Why does light travel at speed c?", dispelling the widespread qualitative notion that the speed of light results from time delays in the interaction of electric and magnetic fields. Also presents information by which readers can work on their own qualitative insights concerning the speed of light. (JN)
