Watkins, David; Akande, Adebowale – Higher Education, 1992
A study investigated the usefulness of two U.S. instruments for measuring college student perceptions of teacher effectiveness. Although the measures showed internal consistency, most items were seen as appropriate, and each item was considered of importance by some students, further analysis suggests cross-cultural validity may be weak.…

Watkins, David – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1986
Learning processes, as measured by the Approaches to Studying Inventory, contributed to the prediction of freshman grades of 181 Australians. Other measures, such as college entrance examinations, locus of control, and student background characteristics, had less predictive ability. (GDC)

Watkins, David – Journal of Personality Assessment, 1978
It is argued that a major failing of most measures of self-esteem is that they do not take into account the value system of the individual subject. A method of measuring self-esteem is proposed based upon self-ratings in life areas, and the importance of those areas to the subject. (Author/JAC)

Watkins, David – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1984
Data from surveys of university students that utilized the Approaches to Studying inventory were analyzed to test the hypothesis that a curvilinear relationship exists between learning strategies and academic grades. However, none of the non-linear regression models investigated improved significantly on the explanatory power provided by the…

Zhang, Li-Fang; Watkins, David – Higher Education, 2001
Studied the relationship between student approaches to learning and stages of cognitive development, also considering the validity of the theory of development of W. Perry (1970). Watkins, David; Hattie, John – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1981
Investigations of the Inventory of Learning Processes (ILP) with college freshmen revealed satisfactory internal consistency coefficients for two of the four ILP scales but cast doubt on the factor structure of the inventory. As predictors of grade point average of Australian students, the scales were successful. (Author/GK)

Watkins, David; Astilla, Estela – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1981
This study suggests that quick, easily administered and scored, nonverbal group tests, such as the Hidden Figures Test, may be useful in selecting students for science and engineering courses in developing countries where demand for manpower is great, but where availability of measuring instruments is limited. Watkins, David; Akande, Adebowale – Assessment and Evaluation in Higher Education, 1992
A study investigated the reliability and validity of the Study Process Questionnaire (Biggs) for 352 undergraduates in a Nigerian university. Although it was found that the concepts involved were relevant to this population and scales and subscales had adequate internal consistency, cross-cultural comparison of scores was problematic. Watkins, David – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
An extension of Tinto's model of the college dropout process was tested with freshmen at an Australian university. The college entrance examination was a relatively valid predictor of whether students will pass, achieve honors, or fail or withdraw. Nonintellective factors were not valid predictors of academic progress. (Author/BW)

Watkins, David; Regmi, Murari – Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education, 1995
A study analyzed constructs surrounding 45 Nepalese master's students' approaches to and conceptions of learning. Findings cast doubt on the construct…

Watkins, David – Research in Higher Education, 1994
A model of college teaching effectiveness and two related questionnaires developed in the United States were studied for validity in six culturally varied countries (India, Nepal, Nigeria, Philippines, Hong Kong, New Zealand). Results generally supported the cross-cultural validity of the measures and their underlying model of teaching. (MSE)

Watkins, David; Thomas, Babu – Assessment and Evaluation in Higher Education, 1991
This study applied 2 U.S. instruments to assess 11 Indian graduate students' evaluations of teaching effectiveness. Results indicated high internal consistency, and the measures' items were seen as appropriate. Analysis suggested more overlap between teaching skill and enthusiasm than evident in Western studies.
