Describes a process in which problems randomly selected from assigned homework sets are used as quizzes. Students take the quizzes seriously because advance knowledge makes their studying effective. Grading is simplified and the motivation for low effort in homework completion is removed. (SK)

Homework of 142 students in an operations management was graded and performance on a multiple-choice test was compared to that of 188 without graded homework. The treatment group had lower overall scores. Grading did not affect performance on quantitative questions but had a significant effect on nonquantitative questions. (SK)

A comparison was made of student evaluations of teacher effectiveness following two approaches: classes with no homework (n=110) and classes with daily homework (n=170). Grades were higher and student evaluations of teacher effectiveness were greater in classes with daily homework assignments. (JOW)

Business students (n=112) who took either an eight-week or 16-week class were compared on grade point average, completion of multiple-choice homework questions, and test scores. Students in the longer class performed better overall and on the test. Those who consistently completed homework performed better regardless of class length. (SK)
