Windschitl, Mark; Andre, Thomas – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1998
Investigates the effects of a constructivist versus objectivist learning environment on college students' conceptual change using a computer simulation of the human cardiovascular system as an instructional tool. Contains 33 references. (DDR)
Descriptors: Computer Uses in Education, Concept Formation, Constructivism (Learning), Educational Strategies

Escalada, Lawrence T.; Zollman, Dean A. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1997
Examines the effects of using interactive digital video on student learning and attitudes in an introductory physics course. Results indicate that sophisticated instructional video software can be perceived by students as easy to use and effective. The software can also be used to promote active learning. Contains 48 references. (Author/JRH)

Audet, Richard H.; Abegg, Gerald L. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1996
Compares expert-/novice-based problem-solving behaviors with a Geographic Information Systems program. Uses naturalistic methods to analyze problem-solving strategies for occurrence of thematic elements. Reports that experts relied on logical formulations to query the database while novices used trial-and-error methods and midlevel cognitive…

Williamson, Vickie M.; Abraham, Michael R. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1995
A Particulate Nature of Matter Evaluation Tests was used to explore the effect of computer animations depicting the particulate nature of matter on (n=400) college students' mental models and comprehension of chemical phenomena. Treatment groups received significantly higher conceptual understanding scores than did the control group. (30…

Milkent, Marlene M.; Roth, Wolff-Michael – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1989
Investigated were the effects of interactive computer-generated homework on unit tests, a final examination, and a comprehensive test given near the end of a Physical Science I course. The results indicated that the use of the homework reduced the effectiveness of the American College Test scores as a predictor of course achievement. (YP)

Roth, Wolff-Michael; Milkent, Marlene M. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1991
Examines the relationships between the development of proportional reasoning strategies and three cognitive variables from Pascual-Leone's and Case's neo-Piagetian theories: (1) degree of field independence; (2) M-space; and (3) short-term storage space. Describes the ability of students to transfer problem-solving schemata to new contexts as well…

Lin, Xiaodong; Lehman, James D. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1999
Describes a study of college students who designed and conducted experiments involving control of variables after being assigned to one of four versions of a computer-based biology simulation learning environment. Finds that reason-justification prompts directed students' attention to understanding the employment of experimental design principles…
