A study is reported examining language and learning laboratories as they exist today in United States colleges and universities. In an effort to supplement textbooks for Elementary German college students, a series of spoken vocabulary lists has been recorded on tape. The added audio dimension gives an extra focus for learning and aids pronunciation and phonetic understanding. Students may copy tapes for independent study. A recording script is included. (CHK)

A framework of selected administrative guidelines is presented for language laboratory directors and supervisors. Internal administration and operation, relations with faculty, and roles outside the university are covered. (SW)

A survey of college students' attitudes toward use of the language laboratory found that an initial positive attitude toward the laboratory in the first semester becomes more negative during the second semester, suggesting that new instructional materials are needed to maintain the initial favorable attitude toward the laboratory. A description of a complicated evaluation system to stimulate student motivation in university level German language courses. A discussion of the use of films in foreign language teaching. A particular problem is the lack of readily available foreign language films without subtitles. A procedure for modification of the sixteen millimeter projector in order to obscure subtitles is described in detail. (AMH)

In 1975 all four-year and two-year colleges in the country offering two or more foreign languages were surveyed regarding use of videotape in language instruction. Questions were asked regarding types of equipment, use and acceptability, and answers indicate great interest in videotape potential and pedagogical value. (CHK)
