The possible subtle influence of calculators in the routine evaluation of the arithmetical proficiency of students is noted. The authors show with statistical interpretation the results of a study conducted on a class of 71 first-year professional pharmacy students taking a two-credit hour pharmaceutical calculations course. An attitude survey and arithmetic tests were given to samples of students in order to quantify the benefit obtained from their use of calculators. Results showed that the use of the calculators does improve students' arithmetic performance with the less able students showing about twice the improvement of the more able. (MN)
