Stout, Wendy Rose – ProQuest LLC, 2022
The purpose of this exploratory collective case study is to discover how geospatial education can meet the geospatial workforce needs of the Commonwealth of Virginia, in the emerging intelligent web mapping era. Geospatial education uses geographic information systems (GIS) to enable student learning by increasing in-depth spatial analysis and…

Moser, Julie A. – ProQuest LLC, 2018
Recently, professional learning communities (PLCs) have been advocated as a promising approach in higher education (Eaker & Sells, 2015) for faculty development that can improve student learning outcomes and help students graduate with demonstrable skills, yet the field is still lacking in research on this phenomenon within higher education…

Ross, Brian H.; And Others – Cognitive Psychology, 1990
A reminding-based generalization view of category learning was studied in 4 experiments involving a total of 247 college students. Experiments demonstrated that categorization by reminding can affect what is learned about the category and later categorization performance. Implications of the results for category learning are discussed. (SLD)

Kirk, Sandra; And Others – Journal of Educational Research, 1978
The effect of general and specific cues on learning information from graphs is analyzed. The study shows that the use of cues influenced the amount of information learned, with variations according to type and placement of cues. (JMF)

Sweller, John; Levine, Marvin – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1982
The operation of means-ends analysis (MEA) involves attempts at reducing differences between problem states and the goal state. It was paradoxically found that the more problem solvers knew of the goal state, the less they learned of the problem structure during the solution process. (PN)

Bridges, David – Studies in Higher Education, 1993
Transferability of skills in learning is discussed, focusing on the notions of cross-disciplinary, generic, core, and transferable skills and their role in the college curriculum. Cross-disciplinary or cross-curricular skills are examined in terms of their relationship to cognitive domains, and transferable skills in relation to social domains.…

Tomlinson-Keasey, Carol; Eisert, Debra C. – Journal of College Student Personnel, 1978
The ADAPT program for freshmen emphasizes building an experiential base in introductory courses before moving to abstract formulations. Litchfield, Brenda C.; And Others – Journal of Computer-Based Instruction, 1990
Describes study that examined the effects of presentation sequence of examples and example difficulty on undergraduate learning with computer-based instruction. Establishing example difficulty according to a generalization formula versus subject matter experts is discussed, and effects on time on task and the number of examples required are…

Ashby-Davis, Claire – Reading Horizons, 1986
Presents a method for improving reading comprehension through direct instruction of inductive reasoning. Students gather clues to personality of characters as play progresses and from these arrive at an overall generalization concerning the complexities of the character. (SRT)

Chen, C. S.; And Others – Journal of College Science Teaching, 1984
Determined effects of including supplementary readings designed to help students (N=233) relate physics to other fields. Both achievement and attitude were measured and significant improvement differences were found for both due to the treatment. Sources for the supplemental readings are cited. (JM)
