Storm, Benjamin C.; Angello, Genna; Bjork, Elizabeth Ligon – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 2011
Research on retrieval-induced forgetting has shown that retrieval can cause the forgetting of related or competing items in memory (Anderson, Bjork, & Bjork, 1994). In the present research, we examined whether an analogous phenomenon occurs in the context of creative problem solving. Using the Remote Associates Test (RAT; Mednick, 1962), we…

Campbell, Jamie I. D.; Thompson, Valerie A. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 2012
Retrieval-induced forgetting (RIF) is a widely studied phenomenon of human memory, but RIF of arithmetic facts remains relatively unexplored. In 2 experiments, we investigated RIF of simple addition facts (2 + 3 = 5) from practice of their multiplication counterparts (2 x 3 = 6). In both experiments, robust RIF expressed in response times occurred…

Tun, Patricia A.; Lachman, Margie E. – Developmental Psychology, 2008
This study demonstrated effects of age, education, and sex on complex reaction time in a large national sample (N = 3,616) with a wide range in age (32-85) and education. Participants completed speeded auditory tasks (from the MIDUS [Midlife in the U.S.] Stop and Go Switch Task) by telephone. Complexity ranged from a simple repeated task to an…

Anderson, Michael C.; Spellman, Barbara A. – Psychological Review, 1995
The uncertain status of cognitive inhibitory mechanisms is addressed, focusing on their function in memory retrieval. Four experiments with 249 college students show that classical associative theories of interference are insufficient as accounts of forgetting and that inhibitory processes must be at work. (SLD)
