The listings are selective, with emphasis on critical works published in the twentieth century. Contents include a preface explaining the guide, followed by the main sections: "Bibliographies, Journals, and Surveys of Scholarship"; "Literary Histories"; "General Critical Studies and Collections"; "Special Topics" (Historical, Social, and Intellectual Background, Publishing, Authorship, and the Reading Public, Genres, Schools, Influences, and Subjects); and "Individual Novelists." Among the 84 Victorian novelists included are Sir Walter Scott, William Harrison Ainsworth, the Brontes, Thomas Hardy, Charles James Lever, Lady Morgan, and Anthony Trollope. (RB)
