The Continuing Saga of Institutes and Centers. Report No. 28.
Friedman, Renee C.
The terms "institutes and centers" or organized research units are used to refer to the broad range of "non-departmental structural alternatives" often called "laboratories,""bureaus" or "clinics" at the host institutions. Current status, growth trends, and organizational sponsorships of these institutes and centers are reviewed in this report. The growth rate has slowed, but these nondepartmental alternatives continue to proliferate. Those disciplines or programs with direct linkages to public policy questions such as social sciences, regional studies, and education display greater volatility and are more likely to have shorter tenure as institutes and centers. Phaseout decisions are based on many issues, including financial exigency and director terminations. Appended is tabular data on organized research units by division at 51 land-grant institutions.
