City University Student Survey.
Podell, Lawrence
The results of a survey conducted during the 1976-77 academic year of a sample of 9,500 City University of New York (CUNY) students selected from among all 1976 enrollees are reported. A summary of 17 major findings is provided. Fifteen of these apply to the general student population and two apply more specifically to ethnic students. Results that apply to the general student body include: (1) CUNY students were, on the average, older than the students of most American colleges; (2) the majority of CUNY students resided in parental households; (3) the majority of CUNY students had jobs during the semester; and (4) preparing for a profession was the most important reason for going to college for 42 percent of CUNY students. Findings that dealt with ethnic backgrounds are: (1) over one-third of the senior college students and over one-half of the community college students at CUNY were black or hispanic; and (2) one in four CUNY students lived in bilingual households, with one in twenty living in families in which a language other than English was spoken primarily. Statistics comparing CUNY to other colleges across the nation are provided. (SPG)
